Shippers’ perspective on air freight is shifting. Traditionally seen as an expensive mode to combat unforeseen delays, more and more shippers are making air freight a part of their planned shipments. According to IATA, demand grew 11% year-over-year in December, marking 14 consecutive months of double-digit increases. By March 2025, capacity had grown by 4.3%, with over half of global air cargo now moving in belly-hold space.

“This isn’t the first time we’ve supported shippers through a tariff deadline,” said Mike Short, president of global forwarding at C.H. Robinson. “Before the April 2 cutoff, we worked with a customer to expedite their shipment and helped them reduce transportation and duty costs by over 50%. With the extension, similar requests may increase again.”
Brokers like C.H. Robinson are preparing for the upcoming NMFC overhaul on July 19. "It can easily take up to 10 minutes to manually look up or confirm the freight class and code for every emailed LTL tender, Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer Arun Rajan said. “For shipments the AI agent is reasoning through for the first time, it can choose a freight classification in about 10 seconds.”
“We’re also hearing from our other customers that, given the constant flux in the economy, item-level visibility is their number one technology need. That’s why we decided that this is the right time to offer this road-tested set of capabilities to all companies who need them,” said Michael Castagnetto, President of NAST at C.H. Robinson.
